Hi Jenni, nice post :) Sad to say my bike naming has been utilitarian with my bikes over the last few years having being named, ‘B1’, ‘B2’, ‘B3’, ‘B4’, ‘B5’, ‘B6’, and ‘C1’. They sound more like bus routes than bikes. Will put in more effort next time!
Love the names! I have plans for one more blast on the trails with “The Blue Beast” before passing it on to a charity who donate bikes to refugees. I possibly need to do some training first as The Blue Beast is a heavy 26” mountain bike 😳
Lovely story, I enjoyed reading about your bike’s names. Richard the fucking Lionheart is my current. He named himself. But I do call him Lion for short. So, bike naming is now a thing, the lady that taught me how to pack my bike, and how to change a flat, said so. Ta Jenny :-)
Im just about to set off on a 3 month tour, first stop Florence, on a bike my friend Fergie gave me. I’ve been searching for a name and it came to me in a dream… Florence Fergieson.
I love this post! All my bikes have proper names. They just kind of come to me, my bikes tell me what they want to be called.
Not to self promoted, but I actually published an entire piece about my bikes and my story with them, including their names: https://sportliterate.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Alex-bicycling-2.pdf (named after the now defunct amazing femme-centered cycling apparel brand 🥲 #ripmachinesforfreedom)
When I lived in London I bought a Tokyo Bike from the Shoreditch store. I worked in Clerkenwell and lived in Stockwell, and LOVED cycling to work and back. (fairweather, obvs). My yellow bike is called MANGO - her name was and is perfect for her! She's now with me in Germany, and every time I ride her I think of those London days.
Two of my bikes have names! Morpheus (god of dreams) for my road bike and Brompy (no surprise, that's the Brompton). But my commuter bike hasn't yet revealed herself...

They sound like versions of Bromptons…but they ARE Bromptons, no?
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏

A bon voyage for the blue beast! 👋💙
Bikes past and present: Frankenbike, Old Lady, Blue Arrow, Red State, Green State, Spectre
An excellent spread of names 🙌

You’re very welcome! Lion is a great name 🦁 Lionel would be good too 😹
Eddy obviously - after the great Eddy Merckx and his fondness for a pastry
Obviously! Pastry is the secret weapon 🥐
We've only got three names among a stable of around 10 at the mo.
Binks - the yellow Brompton
Amira - the carbon whip
Gregory - an old Charge single speed
Hoping some of the others share their names soon.
All in good time... but also it's ok if they're not ready yet 💛
Thank you for sharing! 🙌

Dream bike! Literally and figuratively - I love it. Buon viaggio!

What an awesome essay! I really enjoyed reading it. Please make sure you let us know when the book is released 🙏

Tokyo Bike is right down the street from us! What a small world. Mango is a great name AND colour (and fruit!) 🥭

Those are great names! I'm sure the commuter will introduce herself when she's good and ready - you do already have a gender! 😹
