Jenni, my husband just got the clip ones and I'm terrified of these. What if you stop suddenly? How do you not fall? Can you just lift your feet to unclip? Sooooooooo many questions lol... (I may still be freaking out because of my biking accident in July).
You fears are justified, it takes practice to get comfortable with them! If they are the Shimano SPD SH56 (2 bolt multi-directional) you can clip out in any direction, even lifting up. But feel free to weigh the benefits against your fears, they are not better, they’re just different.
Best way to start out if you’re curious is to put one hand on the wall, and practice clipping in and out until it makes sense. Then switch hands and do the other side. Then try riding in a park, somewhere away from cars, and repeat “clip out clip out clip out” over and over until it becomes second nature 😹 easy! 😅
I mean, when I'm cycling to work and my panier is filled with my laptop and my lunch and my coffee and my heavy bike lock I would sure love each pedal to translate to more momentum, but I just don't know if it I'd love it enough to risk another fall. But thank you...
I’m with you - I don’t clip in when riding to work, there are too many situations where I will need to stop quickly: someone could walk out in front of me or worse - pull out in front of me. In fact, I ride much slower than most people bc it shortens my stopping time. I’m a big advocate of slow & steady cycling, I should write a newsletter about that 🤔
